        GOD REACHES OUT:                            CHAPTER ONE 1 - This is the beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made through him. Nothing that has been made without him. Life was in him, and that life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness has not understood it. Politicians, sociologists, and marketing executives all know this fact: We're taught to live by scripts__stories we are fed that seek to prescribe the truth about our lives. For example, a global telecommunications company has engineered an entire advertising campaign around the prevailing myth that "bigger is always better." And certain versions of the American Dream provide a prevalent narrative: To be content, we must secure a house, car, and lucrative job . . . and then secure a large house, a shinier car, and even more lucrative job.
